In 2001, board-certified vascular surgeon Dr. Robert Gingery brought to the local community advanced stent graft surgery for patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms — a condition that affects 1.5 million Americans and ranks as a leading cause of death in our country. As a person ages, the aorta gradually loses strength and balloons out. This "ballooning" is known as an aneurysm. If the aneurysm ruptures, it is likely fatal. With the procedure, two small incisions in the groin replace opening the abdomen, and patients leave the hospital after only a couple of days, as compared with a week or longer with conventional surgery. Blood loss during surgery is minimized, pain is reduced and recovery time is significantly shorter.
