Cardiopulmonary Care

With a commitment to fulfilling the individual needs of each patient, San Leandro Hospital provides a wide range of services for adults with abnormalities affecting the heart, lungs and blood vessels.
Emergency Care
Major cardiac and respiratory conditions are handled in the hospital’s emergency department by board-certified emergency physicians and hospital staff specially trained and experienced in emergency care.

Inpatient Care
Depending on the need, patients with heart, lung or circulatory conditions are cared for on the hospital’s critical care, telemetry, medical/surgical or transitional care units. Each patient is assigned a registered nurse who coordinates the care of the patient with the help and support of an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals, including licensed vocational nurses, nursing assistants, therapists, case managers, nutritional counselors and others.

Congestive Heart Failure Care
Recently, an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals at the hospital explored ways to improve the care of congestive heart failure patients. The team succeeded in achieving its goals, including establishing a process for ensuring patients receive needed medication in a timely fashion as well as ensuring patient receive dietary education and follow-up telephone contact following discharge. This is just one example of the ongoing commitment to improving quality at the hospital.

Vascular Surgery
San Leandro Hospital provides the latest surgical procedures for vascular conditions, including angioplasty and stenting, peripheral vascular bypass and atherectomy, arterial venal access for dialysis and, in the latest addition, minimally invasive aortic aneurysm repair.

Dr. Robert Gingery

In 2001, board-certified vascular surgeon Dr. Robert Gingery brought to the local community advanced stent graft surgery for patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms — a condition that affects 1.5 million Americans and ranks as a leading cause of death in our country. As a person ages, the aorta gradually loses strength and balloons out. This "ballooning" is known as an aneurysm. If the aneurysm ruptures, it is likely fatal. With the procedure, two small incisions in the groin replace opening the abdomen, and patients leave the hospital after only a couple of days, as compared with a week or longer with conventional surgery. Blood loss during surgery is minimized, pain is reduced and recovery time is significantly shorter.
